Seasonal Hair Care: Preparing Your Extensions for Spring & Summer Activities

How to keep your hair extensions gorgeous—no matter the season

Sunshine, sweat, and summer adventures are good for the soul—but they can be a lot on your hair extensions. From spontaneous hikes to long days by the pool, your spring and summer lifestyle brings new challenges for maintaining healthy, blended, beautiful hair.

At Crown Extension Studio, we believe you should never have to choose between an active life and elevated beauty. Whether you're sporting a full beaded row install or just clipping in a halo for a wedding weekend, here’s how to protect your investment while embracing everything spring and summer have to offer.

1. Protect Your Extensions from UV Damage

Just like your skin, hair can suffer from prolonged sun exposure. UV rays can fade your color, dry out the strands, and make your extensions look dull or brittle.

Our tips:

  • Use a UV-protectant leave-in spray before outdoor events (we'll recommend our faves during your next visit!)

  • Wear a hat or silk scarf during peak sun hours

  • Keep your hair tucked in a braid or bun to minimize direct exposure

2. Swimming? Yes. But Take Precautions.

Chlorine, salt water, and mineral-heavy mountain lakes can all wreak havoc on extension hair—especially if it’s lightened. While we don’t recommend swimming with your extensions in on a regular basis, we do believe in living your life.

If you’re going to swim:

  • Wet your hair with clean water and saturate it in a leave-in conditioner first

  • Braid or secure your hair in a low bun to prevent tangling

  • Rinse thoroughly and detangle immediately after swimming

  • Avoid getting sunscreen or tanning oil in your hair—these can stain extensions

3. Sweat Happens: Keep the Scalp Clean

Warmer weather means more perspiration—and for women with extensions, that can lead to buildup at the root or beads.

What to do:

  • Wash your scalp gently with a sulfate-free shampoo every 3–5 days

  • Use a cool blow dryer at the roots to prevent moisture buildup

  • Try a dry shampoo between washes to absorb oil without irritation

4. Don’t Skip the Brushing

Outdoor elements like wind and dry heat can create more friction, especially if you’re wearing your hair down. Brushing regularly keeps tangles at bay and extends the life of your extensions.

Use:

  • A loop brush or a soft-bristle brush designed for extensions

  • Gentle detangling starting at the ends and working up

  • Nightly brushing before bed (bonus: tie in a loose braid or low pony to sleep)

5. Summer Travel Tips for Your Extensions

Whether you’re flying to a tropical island or road-tripping through Colorado, prep your hair like you’d prep your suitcase.

Travel tips:

  • Pack a silk scrunchie, travel-size brush, and mini hair oil

  • Use a silk pillowcase at hotels or rentals to reduce friction

  • Don’t forget your extension-safe shampoo & conditioner

6. Book a Seasonal Refresh

Spring and summer are the perfect times to tone your color, tighten your rows, or add a little length and volume for upcoming events. If it’s been a while since your last maintenance appointment—or if you have weddings, vacations, or photos coming up—get on the books early.
